Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has inaugurated a new cabinet-level security committee aimed at developing sustainable, homegrown solutions to emerging security challenges across the state.
The committee — christened Safer Kwara Committee — is chaired by Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, with Dr. Olufunke Mercy Shittu of the Office of the Head of Service serving as secretary. Other members include the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brig.-Gen. Saliu Tunde Bello (rtd.); Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Abdullahi Bata; Senior Special Assistant on Security, Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu; Special Assistant on Security, Alhaji Moshood Gobir; and one local government chairman from each of the three senatorial districts.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, the government said the committee would engage traditional rulers, community leaders, and other critical stakeholders to develop a security blueprint tailored to Kwara’s peculiar needs.
“The committee will midwife exclusive engagements with different stakeholders, including traditional rulers, to design a Kwara-specific security strategy to strengthen public safety,” Ajakaye stated.
The panel is expected to submit its report within four weeks. According to the government, the recommendations will “further enrich existing understanding of the nationwide security situations from local perspectives.”
Kwara, like several states in the North-Central region, has in recent months witnessed sporadic security breaches, including kidnapping, attacks on rural communities, and threats to internal mobility and commerce. The establishment of the Safer Kwara Committee forms part of the state government’s broader effort to strengthen local intelligence, deepen community participation in security management, and support federal interventions.
The new initiative also aligns with Governor AbdulRazaq’s ongoing investment in security infrastructure, including improved logistics for security agencies, support for community policing, and dialogue-based conflict-resolution mechanisms.
With the committee now constituted, expectations are high that its findings will help shape a more coordinated and locally responsive approach to protecting lives and property across the State
