Daniel Etim-Effiong has steadily emerged as one of the leading voices in Nollywood’s new wave — a multi-talented actor, writer and filmmaker whose evolution reflects determination, creativity and an unusual career path.
Born in Jaji, Kaduna State, Etim-Effiong spent his early years between Benin City, Lagos and Abuja, following the postings of his father, Lt. Col. Moses Effiong, a Nigerian Army officer. His family history is marked by a significant national episode: his father was among the officers convicted following the 1986 Vatsa Coup and later granted a presidential pardon years after his release.
Daniel attended St. Mary’s Private School on Lagos Island and Government College, Ikorodu, before proceeding to the Federal University of Technology, Minna, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. He briefly worked in the oil and gas sector before making a bold decision to pursue a career in film and storytelling.
To prepare for the transition, he enrolled at AFDA Film School in South Africa to study filmmaking, screenwriting and directing, and later undertook further training at the University of Johannesburg. Upon returning to Nigeria, he worked as a content producer for NdaniTV, setting the stage for his entry into full-time acting and directing.
His early directorial work includes the 2017 short film, Prey, produced by his wife, Toyosi, and featuring Tope Tedela and Odenike Odetola. In 2019, his profile rose further after he starred in the Kenyan-Nigerian romantic comedy Plan B, where his performance earned him an AMVCA nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy.
Etim-Effiong maintained his momentum in 2020, taking on lead and supporting roles in a number of films, including Fish Bone, produced by Editi Effiong, and Storm, produced by reality star Diane Russet. That same year, he directed the documentary Skin, produced by Beverly Naya, which explored the sensitive subject of colorism and identity in Nigeria.
Beyond acting, he became a recognizable face in continental campaigns, including Bland2Glam’s #ThePowerof7 fashion anniversary project in 2019.
This year marks another milestone for the actor-turned-director. Etim-Effiong made his feature-length directorial debut with The Herd, a psychological crime thriller released nationwide on October 17, 2025. Produced by FilmOne Studios in partnership with ToriTori Films, Serendipity HHC and Airscape, the film has already recorded an impressive cinema run and is scheduled to begin streaming on Netflix from November 21, 2025.
The film’s success adds a significant chapter to his career, solidifying his place among Nollywood creatives who are expanding the industry’s storytelling landscape with modern themes, improved technical standards and international ambitions.
For Etim-Effiong, the journey from engineering to entertainment reflects more than a career change. It is the fulfillment of a passion he has nurtured since childhood — one he hopes to channel into more compelling stories for African and global audiences.
As he continues to evolve, Daniel Etim-Effiong stands not only as one of Nollywood’s most versatile talents, but also as a filmmaker intent on shaping the next chapter of the industry.
