The Emirates Stadium will host another blockbuster Premier League clash this Sunday as Arsenal lock horns with Manchester City in a contest that could shape the early title race. The 4:30 pm kickoff pits Mikel Arteta against his former boss Pep Guardiola in a fixture already loaded with subplots.
Arsenal, unbeaten in their last five encounters with City, come into the match on the back of February’s unforgettable 5-1 demolition of the then champions. Victory on Sunday would see the Gunners record back-to-back league wins over City for the first time since 2015, while also cementing Arteta’s growing reputation as Guardiola’s toughest student-turned-rival.
“It’s about winning again and creating another good moment for us,” Arteta told reporters at his pre-match press conference. “Consistency, competing against one of the best teams in the world, is always a huge test. This game will show us our level.”
For Guardiola, the Emirates has become a difficult hunting ground. City’s last two Premier League visits ended in defeat, a streak the Catalan manager admits still stings. “The last 15–20 minutes [of the 5-1] was a disaster. We forgot to do what we have to do. Hopefully this season we can make more of a challenge because Mikel is an extraordinary manager,” he said. “Step by step, Arsenal is becoming the most solid team in Europe. They don’t make mistakes.”
While Arsenal have enjoyed defensive solidity—six straight league games without conceding from open play—City’s away form is a concern. Guardiola’s men have managed just six wins in their last 17 league trips, compounded by a sluggish start to the campaign with defeats at Brighton and Tottenham.
City steadied nerves with a 3-0 Manchester derby win and a Champions League victory over Napoli in midweek, with Erling Haaland continuing his prolific run. But their vulnerability on the road remains a storyline heading into Sunday.
“City are in transition after losing big names like Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kyle Walker,” football analyst Adrian Clarke observed. “They’re experimenting tactically—sometimes looking less assured against high presses. That’s where Arsenal could hurt them.”
Arsenal remain hopeful over the fitness of captain Martin Ødegaard and defender Ben White, while Bukayo Saka is racing against time to recover from a hamstring injury. William Saliba, however, is available after returning midweek.
City face setbacks of their own. Summer signing Rayan Aït-Nouri is sidelined with an ankle injury, while Rayan Cherki is ruled out with a hamstring problem. Mateo Kovačić is still rehabilitating after Achilles surgery, though John Stones has returned to the squad.
All eyes will again be on Haaland, who has 19 goals in 20 league games in London. But Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres is also in fine form, scoring in both of his Premier League home appearances so far.
“This could come down to who controls midfield,” former Arsenal defender Martin Keown told BBC Sport. “If Arsenal press with the intensity they showed last season, they can disrupt City’s rhythm. But Haaland remains the X-factor—stop him and you stop half their goals.”
Arsenal have won their last three home league games by an aggregate score of 9-0.
City have lost five of their last seven Premier League matches immediately after European fixtures.
Arsenal are unbeaten in September Premier League home games since 2012.
With Arsenal’s momentum and City’s inconsistent away form, the Emirates is primed for another dramatic chapter in this growing rivalry. Beyond the points at stake, it is also a battle of wits between master and apprentice.
As Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher put it: “If Arteta beats Guardiola again, it won’t just be about three points—it’ll be a statement that Arsenal are no longer just challengers, but equals.”
