Senator who slaps a woman severally in a viral video pleads not guilty
Embattled Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District, Senator Elisha Abbo has been arraigned and pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault at a Zuba magistrate court, Abuja.
Senator Abbo was arraigned by the police on a one-count charge of assaulting a woman at a shop in Abuja to which he pleaded not guilty.
He was charged after a video of him beating up the woman went viral on social media.
In the video, he slaps the woman severally for trying to prevent him and others with him from assaulting another woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja.
The viral video of the assault sparked outrage with many Nigerians calling for his prosecution by the police.
Senior Magistrate Abdullahi Ilellah granted him bail after he was arraigned at a Zuba Magistrate Court in the nation’s capital city.
He was granted bail in the sum of N5million and sureties who must have verifiable addresses within the Federal Capital Territory.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the case. Six men and two women were appointed as members of the committee which will be headed by Senator Sam Egwu.
