The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has pledged to intensify public enlightenment to ensure nationwide support for the Federal Government’s new tax laws set to take effect in January 2026.

Director-General of NOA, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the commitment in Abuja when he received the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, led by its chairman, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele.

Issa-Onilu said the agency would deploy its broad communication network to counter misinformation and improve citizens’ understanding of the tax reforms, which he said were designed to ease multiple taxation on businesses and individuals.

“With technology, it has become easy for wrong narratives to spread. We must help Nigerians understand the benefits of the new tax laws,” he stated. “The reforms will address double taxation affecting companies, workers, investors, and the general public.”

He explained that the NOA operates offices nationwide with trained personnel capable of reaching diverse demographics—including traders, CSOs, youth and women groups—through targeted engagements.

“We do engagements across the country, and our staff are usually chosen from the people, so the people trust them; that is part of the advantage we have,” he added.

The DG also noted extensive media partnerships that amplify the agency’s outreach, revealing that the NOA collaborates with over 200 radio stations and 36 television stations broadcasting in around 72 local languages.

Beyond traditional channels, Issa-Onilu highlighted innovations in digital communication, including the launch of a new government-focused artificial intelligence assistant.

“We launched our own version of ChatGPT called CLHEEAN, where Nigerians can engage and get authentic information on all government policies,” he disclosed.

Earlier, Oyedele said the committee sought NOA’s support to dispel misconceptions about the new tax laws, especially at the grassroots.

“We believe that working together with NOA will ensure accurate information reaches Nigerians,” he said. “There is a lot of misinformation targeted at making people hate the government ignorantly.”

He stressed that the reforms would improve the tax system for farmers, students, business executives, and others, urging collaboration to highlight these benefits.

“If people are well informed, they will not protest what is in their best interest,” Oyedele added.

Both parties agreed to set up a joint committee to drive extensive sensitisation campaigns ahead of the law’s enforcement.

The visit also featured the presentation of the new Tax Act to the NOA leadership and the conferment of the National Value Charter plaque on Oyedele.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Tax Reforms Act into law in June as part of efforts to simplify Nigeria’s fiscal framework and strengthen revenue administration.
