Nigerian Youths attack Buhari for allegedly saying they want everything free
President Muhammadu Buhari has come under fire on for criticizing youths who he said “do nothing” and want everything for “free” in the oil-rich country.
Buhari made the remark on Wednesday at a business conference in London.
“A lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming, you know, that Nigeria has been an oil producing country therefore they should sit and do nothing and get housing, health care, education, free,” said Buhari.
The comment angered youths in West Africa’s largest economy which suffers from high unemployment and lacks basic government services, including running water and electricity.
On Thursday morning, the hashtag #LazyNigerianYouths was trending on Twitter, with young Nigerians blasting the government.
But the presidency has denied deriding all Nigeria Youths.
Spokesman to the President, Femi Adesina in a Statement accused manipulators and twisters of statements of President Buhari of interpreting the comment to mean that the President had taken all Nigerian youths to the Cleaners
“There is no way President Buhari, father of the Nigerian nation in every sense of the word, who equally has biological children of his own in the youths age bracket, pass a vote of no confidence on all youths. It can only exist in the imagination of those who play what the President has described as “irresponsible politics” with everything”.
Adesina said President Buhari has always applauded and celebrated Nigerian youths who excel in different areas of endeavour, from sports, to academia, and other realms. And he will continue to do so, because he values the youths, and knows that they are the fulcrum on which the future of the country rests.
