Arsenal snatched a stunning late victory at St. James’ Park as Gabriel’s towering 96th-minute header capped a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Newcastle United.
For long stretches, it looked as though the Gunners’ dominance would count for nothing, with Nick Pope in inspired form and Nick Woltemade giving the Magpies a first-half lead. But substitute Mikel Merino and Gabriel turned the tide in the closing stages, ensuring Mikel Arteta’s men closed the gap on league leaders Liverpool to just two points.
Arsenal began brightly, with Viktor Gyökeres twice denied by Pope and Leandro Trossard rattling the woodwork. Early drama unfolded when Bukayo Saka forced a mistake from Jacob Murphy, leading to Pope tripping Gyökeres inside the box. Referee Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot, only for VAR to overturn the penalty after a lengthy review — a decision that infuriated the visitors.
Newcastle, who had beaten Arsenal in four of their last five home meetings, took the lead on 34 minutes. A defensive lapse handed them a corner, and from Sandro Tonali’s delivery, Woltemade muscled past Gabriel to head in his first Premier League goal, giving the hosts a halftime advantage.
The Magpies pressed for a second after the restart, Woltemade hitting the bar and Joelinton flashing a shot across goal. But time and again, Pope kept Arsenal at bay, notably producing a breathtaking reaction save to deny Jurrien Timber’s close-range header.
Finally, with six minutes left, Arsenal broke through. A well-worked short corner saw Declan Rice whip a teasing cross into the box, where former Magpie Mikel Merino ghosted in to bundle the ball home, levelling the score against his old club.
Just as a draw seemed inevitable, Arsenal struck the decisive blow deep into stoppage time. From another Odegaard set piece, Gabriel soared highest and powered a header beyond the helpless Pope, sending the away end into raptures and ending the Gunners’ recent hoodoo on Tyneside.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was glowing in his praise for his side’s resilience when speaking to Sky Sports:
“That’s how you get to a different level — going through those tough moments and taking experiences from it. We discussed that in the game, and it’s a massive opportunity now to make a statement and to prove to everybody and ourselves the team that we are.
“And we certainly did with the performance and thankfully with the result as well at the end.
“That was a statement? Well, for ourselves, yes. Because it’s a terrific team that’s so difficult to play against. And we’ve already played at Old Trafford, Anfield, and against Man City. To show this level of consistency and quality today was top.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted his side fell short despite their battling display:
“I thought we tried. We gave everything to the game. It was really physical. I don’t think we were at our best today, being honest. Arsenal played very well.
“We had our chances in the game and we took the lead and we were desperate to try and hang on to that lead. Nick [Pope] made some good saves for us, but it wasn’t to be, and we conceded set-pieces at the end. It was so disappointing.”
Captain for the day, Bukayo Saka, who was subbed off after 70 minutes on his return from injury, hailed the character shown by his teammates:
“It was a big result. We’ve come here in the past and results have gone against us, or decisions and stuff like that. It was starting to feel like that again today, but we have a big character, a big fight to turn it around, so we’re really happy.
“In the past, we’ve come here and had decisions to go against us and almost today, with the penalty and Nick Pope having an unbelievable game. But we dug in and we showed that character, that resilience we have. We made a big statement today. It’s really good for us, you can see it in all of our faces.”
On celebrating Gabriel’s late winner, he added:
“It was top, man — we had to run out to the corner flag and share the moment with Gabi! It’s a big moment for us as a team. I felt we dominated the game, we controlled it, and at the end, we got what we deserved.
“It’s a beautiful feeling every time I get to wear the armband, and even better when we get three points, so I’m really happy.”
With two home fixtures against Olympiacos and West Ham coming next week, Arteta will hope this hard-fought triumph provides the perfect springboard as Arsenal keep the pressure on Liverpool at the top of the table.
